Qualitative study on sport injury prevention implementation in Luxembourg identifies communication, early education, and coach support as key facilitators (bmjopensem.bmj.com)
- Prevention perceived as negative, fear-based, and reactive rather than proactive
- Coaches identified as central gatekeepers for daily implementation
- Three pillars: coordinated communication, early youth engagement, coach support
- Luxembourg's small size paradoxically leads to fragmented efforts
"This qualitative study in Luxembourg interviewed 12 stakeholders (athletes, coaches, healthcare professionals, institutional representatives) to explore perceptions and practices of injury prevention. Prevention was often seen as reactive, medicalised, and disconnected from performance. Three key facilitators emerged: (1) coordinated communication among stakeholders, (2) early integration of prevention in youth sport through engaging approaches, and (3) structured education and support for coaches, who are central gatekeepers. While Luxembourg's small size offers networking opportunities, fragmented structures and inconsistent communication hinder coherent implementation. Reframing prevention as performance-enhancing and improving system-level coordination are recommended."
